Everybody’s Doing It.
“Doing what?” you ask.
Creating Trusts—revocable or irrevocable—and placing vehicles into the ownership of those trusts. And lately, we’re seeing more trust-related vehicle transactions than ever before.
With that increase has come a steady rise in calls asking us how to process a vehicle when a trust is involved. While we’re always happy to help, it’s important to know that we have detailed, step-by-step instructions available for exactly these situations.
Whether you’re encountering a trust during a registration renewal, or as part of a mid-year ownership change, the process is clearly outlined in our FAQs.
Why this matters
Processing a vehicle in the name of a trust is not the same as an individual or business ownership change. The wording, ownership fields, and supporting documentation must be entered correctly to ensure the transaction is accepted and recorded properly.
Please take a moment to review the Trust instructions in our FAQs. In most cases, you’ll find everything you need to:
- determine how the trust should be entered,
- understand when trustee names are required, and
- complete the transaction correctly the first time.
If you’ve reviewed the documentation and still have questions, we’re absolutely here to help. But starting with the FAQs will save you time—and often eliminate the need to call at all.
Bottom line: Trusts are becoming the norm, not the exception. Familiarizing yourself with the Trust process now will make future transactions smoother for both you and your customers.
